Do hair transplants work?

Basically, a hair relocation takes hair you have and moves it to an area where you don’t have hair. It can be taken from any part of your body, but typically from the back of your head.

Your surgeon will use a local anesthetic to numb and sterilize the area where the hair will be removed prior to beginning a transplant. In order to remain asleep throughout the procedure, you may also request sedation.

After that, your surgeon will use one of two transplant procedures: FUT or FUE hair transplant.

In most cases, hair transplants are more successful than products sold over the counter for hair restoration. However, there are a few things to think about:

  • Somewhere in the range of 10 to 80 percent of relocated hair Trusted Source will completely bounce back in an expected three to four months.
  • Like normal hair, relocated hair will thin over the long run.
  • Plasma therapy may help up to 75% or more of the transplanted hairs fully grow back, according to a 2016 study by Trusted Source. Dormant hair follicles are sacs that typically contain hair beneath the skin but no longer grow hair.
  • Hair transfers don’t work for everybody. They are mostly used to replace lost hair after an injury or natural balding or thinning.

Since the majority of transplants use existing hair, they are not as effective for treating:

  • Thick scalp scars from injuries widespread thinning and baldness caused by chemotherapy or other medications.
